Bulgaria - Human Compassion
In 1999, I was in Bulgaria. We arrived to the town of Bracov with absolutely no money. Not even a cent as funds ran out early on the summer trip. An aggressive, English speaking taxi driver who called himself, "Coolio" insisted on giving us a ride, but we told him that we had no money. We visited different bank machines to no avail. But he took us in. We stayed at his farm house with no electricity and no plumbing out in the countryside. There, I became very ill after drinking some tainted water. This man and his family took care of us for 4 days before we were healthy enough to start hitchhiking. A French priest picked us up and gave us some food before dropping us off in Sofia. We decided to stay in a 24 hour pub as we could not afford a hostel. But even the pub was too expensive for us to loiter in, so we decided to leave. But as we were leaving, the English speaking owner took notice of us and struck up a conversation. As he was interested in us, he offered us free drinks all night and a free place to stay (in the pub). What luck! I was amazed yet again at the continued generosity of strangers in random countries.
