Czech Republic
As in life, travel can be full of surprises. While driving a van from Germany into the Czech Republic for the first time, I had some mechanical problems. The van decided to stop taking me eastward once the transmission fell out. Eagerly attempting to meet an old friend, stopping was not an option. I was forced to pack up the essentials and continue heading for the town of Karlovy Vary, where I was to meet my friend. This proved to be somewhat difficult as I had no Czech currency with me (this was before the Euro) and even less knowledge of the language. After somehow getting on a bus, walking and hitch-hiking, I quickly learned just how far body language can take you. I was picked up by some locals who delivered me directly to the town 30 minutes away. I was inspired by their kindness and generosity and thrilled to re-connect with my compatriot. This was a wonderful learning experience that showed me more often than not, we can turn challenges into personal victories.
